Killed two and injured four in northern Alberta

Guilty pleas have been entered in relation to a 2007 roof collapse at a northern Alberta oilsands project that killed two Chinese temporary workers and injured four others.

Sinopec Shanghai Engineering Company (SSEC) Canada Ltd. pleaded guilty last month to three counts under the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA) of failing to ensure the health and safety of the workers.

On April 24, 2007, Hong Liang Liu, 33, an electrical engineer, and Genbao Ge, 27, a scaffolder, died after a roof collapsed in a large oil tank where they were working.

Both were non-union employees of Sinopec.

The collapse also injured four other workers, two seriously, at Canadian Natural’s Horizon project, about 75 km north of Fort McMurray.

A sentencing hearing is scheduled for Jan. 24 at the St. Albert Provincial Court. The maximum penalty for a first offence under the OHSA is $500,000 for each charge.
